Tight Squeeze

A new moderately more comfortable seating alignment for beleaguered long-haul economy passengers is being licensed to other carriers by Air New Zealand. The 140 cm x 80 cm ‘cuddle couch’ allows two passengers to lie flat across three seats – with the limited elbow room, the passengers indulging in such a luxury would need to know each other somewhat intimately beforehand. Those wishing to indulge would pay a premium for their two seats and buy a third one at half price: on a NZ to LA flight that would work out at about $1000 extra. The Skycouch has received several interested parties with airlines able to earn an alleged 6% more per seat on a Boeing 777-300. However, it seems as if travel agents are not currently being overly successful at flogging the concept to Air New Zealand’s existing clientele.
