Typically used by baby boomer suburbanites maintain their driveways or sensitive souls looking to add a dash of pizzazz to their tropical fish tanks, the gravel kit has now found a third function. It is to find a home on Cobham Aviation’s large turboprops which have recently been pressed into new service with a multi-million dollar Fly-in/Fly-out contract in WA’s remote mining communities. The gravel kit shields the plane’s fuselage and undercarriage from dangerous stone chips when they have no alternative but a gravel airstrip. Of course, this is a far cheaper option to laying down a sealed runway and Cobham have hinted that the kit might be available for other operators.
