One of a Kind

04/08/12

Ten years hard labour finally took flight recently as a painstakingly restored 1936 Avro Anson bomber took to the skies at Nelson Airport. “This is the only one of its kind in the world to be flying so the occasion was pretty exciting to watch,” explained Nelson Airport CEO, Kaye McNabb. The event attracted worldwide interest for the husband and wife team, Bill and Robyn Reid, who have spent the past ten years restoring the Avro, making it the only airworthy certified Avro Anson Mark I in the world. The plane started production in 1935, going on to produce more than 11,000, the majority of which were eventually used in WWII as trainers for the antipodean forces. The production line stopped in 1952 but she’ now flying once more and is destined for show-stopping appearances at Warbirds Over Wanaka and Omaka.
