Calling all Captains

It feels as if the same headline crops up every few months somewhere in the world although it regularly pinpoints Australia as the hungriest market. According to a number of sources, a global aviation skills shortage is again intensifying. Airlines in the Middle East are starting a massive recruitment drive over the next 20 years to stave off a drastic loss in pilots and technicians, whilst any pilot with more than 1,500 hours flying time is forecast to easily find employment Downunder. The shortage is not just limited to pilots as, along with the predicted 36,000 new pilots needed by 2032, it is also estimated that 54,000 engineers and technicians will be required to service new and expanding fleets in the Asia Pacific region. However, officials are concerned that the acute need for pilots will result in under-qualified candidates being hired with ensuing safety concerns. Such concerns may be alleviated in our part of the world as so many raw recruits are trained to a high standard in Australia and New Zealand for deployment in other countries.
