August 8th, 1709
On August 8th 1709, Father Bartolomeu de Gusmão, a Brazilian priest, demonstrated a practical model of a hot-air balloon made of a paper envelope with burning material suspended below it to King John V of Portugal in the Ambassador’s drawing room. This first ever demonstration of a practical lighter-than-air craft was curtailed by a gaggle of servants who snatched the balloon out of the air for fear it would set fire to the curtains. The priest’s experiments with designs led him to conceive a project for an actual airship, or rather a ship to sail in the air, consisting of a triangular gas-filled pyramid, but he died before he was able to realise his vision.
