2nd November, 1947
On 2nd November, 1947, Howard Hughes made the first and only flight in the Hughes Aircraft Company H-4 Hercules flying boat, NX37602 – the infamous ‘Spruce Goose’ – at the harbour of Los Angeles, California. Conceived by Henry J. Kaiser, the airplane was initially called the HK-1. It was designed to carry as many as 750 fully-equipped soldiers on transoceanic flights. Eight air-cooled, supercharged Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major four-row 28-cylinder radial engines, producing 4,000 horsepower, each, turned four-bladed Hamilton Standard propellers with diametres of 5.2 metres. On its only flight, the H-4 Hercules traveled approximately one and a half kms at 217 kilometres per hour, remaining in ground effect. It never flew again, and its estimated performance was never verified through flight testing.
