CASA has just released a bulletin stating that the rules covering minimum fuel requirements have changed and are enforceable from 8 November 2018. The rules are applicable to both Operators and private pilots and seek to remove the uncertainty between rules and guidance material. A fixed fuel reserve requirement has been reintroduced whose main change for private operators flying small pistons or turboprops under Day VFR is a reduction to 30 minutes fixed fuel reserve (down from 45 minutes previously). Following feedback from the aviation community the CASA-recommended 45 minutes was reduced, the reduction supported by the introduction of in-flight fuel management requirements.
