Although emergency services arrived within 20 minutes of a gyrocopter crash, they were unable to save the two men onboard who had plunged into 200 metres of water off the coast of Western Australia. Police divers today have been searching the waters off Forrest Beach near Busselton, about 200 kms south of Perth, searching for parts of the aircraft.
A local eyewitness saw the gyrocopter moments before it crashed. Lisa Cartwright explained, “At first we thought it was a shark spotter but it was really loud. We looked closer and it was a metallic grey colour and looked more like a tank. It didn’t look like it was having any difficulties but it passed us twice while I was at the pub. It was flying pretty low to shore and was really loud and it went past at least twice, south first and then north.”
The wreckage of the gyrocopter has been transported to Bunbury for further examination whilst the Australian Sport Rotorcraft Association investigate the cause of the crash.
